Golf Gear 2019: Look For Lighter, Longer
As a new golf equipment year, is upon us, consumers will hear the same refrains in regard to technology and innovation. Those are, that new versions of drivers, fairway metals, hybrids and irons — many of them to be shown off, struck and marketed at the annual PGA Merchandise Show in Orlando Jan. 22-25 — are lighter because more weight has been removed; have improved construction and aesthetics thanks to exotic composites; and are more forgiving because of new clubface technologies. Here’s a sneak peak at golf gear 2019.
Callaway, for example, has it “Jailbreak’’ technology that helped propel the Rogue line of drivers and metal woods into one of the more successful in company history. TaylorMade Golf’s new P760 irons (3-7) features “SpeedFoam’’ technology that the company says serves the dual purpose of generating ball speed while dampening vibrations to create optimal sound and feel.
Cobra’s new King Forged CB/MB irons undergo a five-step forging process the company says delivers precise shaping, a more refined grain structure, and better feel.
This year’s new Titleist TS line of drivers (TS2 and TS3) each feature what parent Acushnet Company calls “Speed Chasis’’ technology — the result of a two-year mission to deconstruct the driver and then design greater speed into every detail.
The Acushnet Company also this year is introducing its next-generation Pro V1 golf ball line. The Pro V1 golf ball — probably the most successful ball golf history — is closing in its 20th anniversary and remains the flagship of Acushnet’s $500 million-plus golf ball empire. The Pro V1 sparked a technology boom in the ball industry as its moved to multi-component constructions and urethane elastomer covers, as well as other components and designs.
Callaway’s Chrome Soft ball, for example, features Graphene in its outer core. Graphene, according to Callaway, is the same foundational carbon material that is the building block in diamond and graphite, similar to that found in lead pencils.
Without getting too deep into physics, Callaway says the Graphene improves the ability of Chrome Soft’s dual core to withstand high velocity club impact. In other words, it helps with the “high launch, low spin” mantra that has been prevalent in the industry the past several years.
Let’s say all the marketing hype around innovation and technology is true. Then let’s ask these questions: How much weight can an equipment company continue to remove? How many more combinations of exotic metals and composites can be designed into a golf club, be it a driver or iron? And gives the U.S. Golf Association restraints on everything from club head size to coefficient of restitution, why don’t equipment companies just go to those boundaries and be done with it?
Tom Olsavsky, vice president of research and development at Cobra Golf and one of the equipment industry’s top club engineers, smiled at the thought.
“All that takes a lot of work,” said Olsavsky, who designed drivers and irons for TaylorMade before joining Cobra in 2013. “We don’t hold anything back and say ‘Let’s do two grams and two grams next year,’ because we can’t. We have to figure out how to get over that first two-gram hurdle. Sometimes that leads us to new things. We just continue to work hard on how to get that next two-to-three grams out of the club.
“When you talk to real (club) engineers, they will say you can get two-to-three yards longer every year pretty consistently. But that two-to-three yards is hard work.’’
Whether it’s removing weight, re-shaping club heads to make them for aerodynamic or combining exotic metals, it’s all part of the process that annually plays out for most major equipment companies preaching extra distance and more forgiveness.
One thing companies don’t like to talk about is price. For example, drivers from most major equipment companies have retail prices between $399 and $599. Their challenge is to get consumers to pay those prices annually for what can be perceived as minimal distance gained. Gone (thankfully) are the days when companies touted up to 20 yards in distance versus last year’s driver.
Tour Edge Golf’s new Exotics EXS driver, with its $299 retail price, could put a big dent into the marketplace. The EXS driver feature what the company calls a Flight Tuning System that includes nine-gram and three-gram interchangeable weights, an adjustable hosel that allows for plus two or minus two degrees in loft, RollFace Technology for an expanded sweet spot, Dual Carbon Fiber placement for better weight distribution and a SlipStream Sole for faster club head speed.
John Claffey, vice president of marketing for Tour Edge, refer to the EXS driver as a “$600 driver’’ but without the marketing hype.
“It’s a new way of thinking for Exotics,” Claffey said. “We studied the market for almost one year on where price points are with bigger manufacturers and how consumer behavior goes along with it. We basically found out there are a lot of golfers just waiting for the right price point.’’
Technology and innovation, of course, aren’t exclusive to clubs and balls. That should be more apparent this year when Golf Pride opens its product development and consumer experience in Pinehurst, North Carolina. The new facility, which will include an R&D lab and consumer grip fitting studio, is expected to open this spring.
“It’s going to help us as far as having more access to consumer and Tour professionals,’’ said Bruce Miller, retail product manager for Golf Pride. “Clearly getting their feedback is important. The faster we can get it, the faster we can turn those ideas around and crystallize into real-life product.’’
It’s all part of the process.

Building Tutorial, sort of.
So today, before I get to work on the rest of Tenby, we’re going to do something a little different: a Building Tutorial. I’m going to be demonstrating basically how to turn boring square boxes in to more interesting looks using very basic details. I don’t think I’ve said it before, but I’m not a complicated builder. I don’t like using too many cheats (usually just moveobjects on) and my goal is to always build something pretty but playable.
This isn’t going to show you how to build a specific lot. I guess it’s more of a collection of tips and tricks to building cool shit without tearing your hair out, but we’re going to go with calling this a tutorial.
Also, while I’m demonstrating this in TS2, it’s applicable to all the games, obviously.
Tumblr media
In that vein we’re starting off with the most basic building imaginable: a square box. Now, there’s nothing wrong with a straight-up box house. It’s just as little boring and personally, I love a little flair. So how do we make our little box hut more interesting, visually?
Shapes
Tumblr media Tumblr media
This is where I start, generally. It’s the easiest thing you can do to add a little pizzazz to a lot. Instead of a square, try a rectangle, or add a wing to make a building that’s L shaped. For this example, we’re going with a long rectangle.
Levels
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Next, play with heights and levels! It automatically changes up a building if you put it on a foundation, or add a second story but leave a bit of roof on. This is a small change, but already it looks very different from the starter hut. For this example I’ll be using the foundation and adding a second story.
Architectural Details
Obviously there’s a ton of CC out there that falls in to this category, but we’re going to stick to the things you can do in build mode for this. Specifically I’m going to talk about the typical things I do in order to spice up a lot.
#1 Add A Lean To
Tumblr media
Probably not the best term, but essential adding a little pop-out structure, either 1 x 3 or 2 x 3, with a slanted roof to the side of a lot instantly changes it up. From what I’ve seen it’s also a pretty common thing in medieval structures to have something added on in that manner... but don’t quote me on that.
#2 Bay Pop Out
Tumblr media
Essentially, adding a bay window using the wall tool. With this you can add fencing to the top, or a roof, make it two stories, add more then one... lots of little changes make this addition very handy because you can use it in multiple ways without it being stale or the exact same thing over and over.
#3 Towers!
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Square Towers and Circle Towers: a few of my favorite things to slap down on a lot. Whether they’re attached to the main building or just set very close by, visually they’re appealing and recognizable... not to mention super easy to construct. They also add some depth and, again, play with the levels/heights. You can top them with a roof, either deco or an actual one, or fencing of some kind. I tend to go for the crenelated types. Making the tower be built of a different material then the house is always a good idea in order to make it stand out.
#4 Jettying
Tumblr media
This is a fairly new one for me. I noticed that very often, especially in tudor-era buildings, the second story would be larger then the first. This was called jettying and was done to increase floorspace, but I never much played around with it before.
#5 Pop-in
Tumblr media
There’s probably a term for this, but basically this involves building a little alcove tucked inward, rather then out like the lean-to or bay window options above. i like doing this with second story buildings, especially on foundations, because it helps with routing.
Tumblr media
There are a lot more things you can do, obviously. But these are my common “go to” options when building. For this example we’re doing the pop-in and a lean-to.
Materials
Wallpaper and floor choices can really sell what you’ve built. Depending on the look or era you’re going for, you’re going to want to have a sort of go-to palette. Creating a collection file is super helpful for this. For this example, let’s say this is a tudor-era building. Now I could go on and on about the specifics of that but instead I’ll leave a wiki link.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
So, to go with that, we’re looking for half-timbered walls with wattle and daub painted white. Depending on the sets that you have, you can add additional detail by using different pieces.
Tumblr media
But instead of making the entire building one type of material, try playing with combinations! The lean-to is an obvious choice for color change, but why not make the first floor brick or stone?
Stairs
Tumblr media
Because we’re using a foundation, we’ll need stairs. Pretty basic logic. But you can always use stairs in different ways to achieve something a little different. Try moving the entrance upstairs or building a covered gazebo for the yard. Little details like that are key when it comes to making your buildings stand out.
Tumblr media
Personally, I always would recommend having multiple exits for houses on foundations. It just saves you the trouble of routing issues and sims being silly. To that end I added a little back porch.
The Dreaded Roof
Tumblr media
I think we all know how frustrating the roofing tool in the game can be, but there is still a lot you can do within the confines of the game to achieve a unique look without it looking crazy. Try adding dormers or changing the angle of the roof, play around until you find something workable that you like.
Doors & Windows
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Probably the hardest part for me. I get a little OCD about placement and even spacing, but sometimes you’ve gotta break that mold. Mixing and matching sets is a good place to start if you’re feeling unsure.
And really, that’s it! I hope this was helpful to some of you :)

Off the southern coast of Malaysia, a futuristic city is rising from the sea. An artificial island, the first of four that will anchor the projected $100 billion Forest City project, has materialized in the Straits of Johor, the channel that separates the Malay Peninsula from Singapore. Three years ago, this was open water. Today, a phalanx of half-built high-rises stretches across the new island, a flock of construction cranes hovering above. When completed, Forest City is expected to cover an area the size of four Central Parks and accommodate 700,000 residents. The metropolis will evoke a high-tech Atlantis, a “smart” eco-city where spacecraft-shaped towers will be draped with greenery, all motorized traffic will flow underground and every inch of the island cluster will be monitored by a state-of-the-art security system. In the words of a promotional video: “It is a pride and dream paradise for all mankind.”
Forest City is billed as one of China’s biggest overseas development projects, but it is hardly the world’s first insta-city. We are, in fact, living in the golden age of the master-planned metropolis. In the last two decades, more than 100 new cities have been (or are being) created from scratch, according to Sarah Moser, an assistant professor of geography at Montreal’s McGill University, where she runs a research lab that tracks new cities. These recent additions to the map tend to arise in developing countries like Morocco, Nigeria, Uganda, Myanmar and Indonesia.

Selection, installation and commissioning of differential protection device for large power generator
         Ships of all sizes, regardless of their type, often encounter some problems that prevent the equipment from operating properly during the construction of the electrical system.
         With the development of modern science and technology, the electrification of ships and the degree of automation are also constantly increasing. The higher the tonnage of ships is, the higher the load on ships is. Therefore, due to the factors such as hull structure and installation of piping system, The use of modern ships is increasingly common, how to better strengthen the protection of high-power generators is particularly important. According to the requirements of the classification society, it is proposed that a high-power generator with a load of more than 1400KVA must use a differential protection device.
         However, in the actual installation and commissioning of electrical equipment for ships, the phenomenon of incorrect connection is very common. The reasons are many and inevitable. In addition to the phenomenon of easy to damage the equipment, the construction cycle of the ship and the loss of manpower and material resources are incalculable, the author now Jinling Shipyard 8050RO-RO series of ships, for example, talk about high-power generators Differential protection device in the installation and commissioning process failure and troubleshooting.
         The generator differential protection device is a kind of protection device that detects whether the line between the generator and the main switch is short-circuited or grounded. The differential protection device is equipped with two current transformers for each phase on the generator side and the distribution board side, and the current of each phase is designed to be overlapped. By using the secondary current detected on the non-inverting generator side and The vector difference of the secondary current detected on the switchboard side enters the differential protection device. The internal circuit of the differential protection device determines whether to issue a command to de-energize the generator according to the differential current (usually not more than 5%) that the generator can withstand, and the tripping board on the main busbar The main switch, the generator in a standby state to protect the generator winding coil damage, to protect the generator to reduce unnecessary losses.
In the actual construction process often appear the following error,
         1, the polarity of the transformer on the generator side or the distribution board side is reversed, that is, any one of RS1 and RS2, SS1 and SS2, TS1 and TS2 is reversed (as shown in Figure 2 and R phase for example) , Will change the generator side and distribution board side of the current vector relationship from the secondary current vector difference into a secondary vector and the current relationship between the two sides so that the current superimposed, it will cause the phase current imbalance , While the set value of the differential protection device , resulting in malfunction of the differential protection device, it is difficult to ensure the normal power supply to the grid generator;
         2, in the generator or distribution board side, the phase transformer line is wrong, that RS1, RS2 and SS1, SS2 or TS1, TS2 between the mistakes, as shown in Figure 3, this will cause the generator side and The difference of the secondary current, which is not in phase with the distribution board, enters into the differential protection device, but the difference of the secondary current between R phase and S phase, S phase and T phase, or T phase and R phase enters the differential protection Device, easily lead to the current imbalance between the phase, resulting in differential protection device action, it is difficult to ensure the normal power supply to the grid generator.
After the above problems, we usually exclude the method is:
         1 Check the connection between the generator side and the switchboard side transformer;
         2 Check the wiring of the generator side transformer;
         3 Check the wiring of the transformer on the switchboard side.
         According to the drawings, you can get the solution. But in actual process, due to the negligence of manufacturers and the internal structure of the equipment, it is often difficult to confirm the polarity of the transformer with the naked eye. Many detours can not find the problem Where you are. The author based on their experience in the field debugging accumulated in this article describes a method: that is, to prepare an ammeter according to the circuit shown in Figure 3 to connect, and then phase by phase measured the difference between the two secondary current vector, according to the current The size of the problem to determine where. There are generally the following situations:
         1 has two phases of the secondary current vector difference is almost zero, and the other phase of the secondary current vector difference than this two-phase equal current vector difference, we can determine the phase of the transformer Reverse polarity, as shown in Figure 2, as long as the polarity of this mutual inductor can be changed;
         2 one phase of the secondary current vector difference is close to zero, while the other two phases of the secondary current vector difference, then we judge there are three cases,
           a The polarity of these two mutual inductors is reversed;
           b the two mutual inductor reversed;
           c the two mutual inductor reversed, at the same time the polarity is reversed;
         3 three-phase current difference between the two currents are not the same, we should take the exclusion method to confirm the same way, with any phase as the standard, change the other two mutual inductor wiring, testing between the phases Of the vector difference current, to compare, according to the size of the current, refer to steps 1 and 2 to find out where the problem lies.
